#32 - 3 Things You Can Do to Cultivate More Happiness in Your Life
It's true for most humans, we crave for nothing more than happiness and go to extreme lengths to try to find it. Often, though, we chaise things that we think will make us happy, only to find out it wasn't quite it.
It has become a consensus that among the wrong places to look for happiness is in the amount of money in our savings account, the number of worldly possessions or properties we own, it is not related to the title we bear or how many Facebook or Instagram likes we get.
So when it is not related to money nor fame nor success, How can we ever find the satisfaction that fills that void in our hearts, how can we find that thing that simply makes us happy.
Things to Keep in Mind
Positive psychology and happiness is actually a thing that is studied among social researches.
And even though I am not one of those, I enjoy reading about their findings. And a couple of studies have shown that there are two things that we need to keep in mind in our attempt & desire to be truly happy.
First things first, CONNECTION; having a deep, intimate connection with the people around us & being able to spend quality time with those we treasure the most – it’s connection that makes us truly happy & fully satisfied, not the number of likes we get on Facebook, but connection with the people.
Our relationships & how happy we are in them have a powerful influence on our health. Yes, it has proven important to have connections for our physical well being too, where loneliness can lead to a series of health issues.,
So it turns out that nurturing our relationships affects us physically, it positively impacts our brains, our mental health and is the birth place for happiness.
Secondly, VALUES; having a strong sense of personal values is pivotal to one’s growth & contentment.
Let me dive into this. Values are very different from goals. Think about it this way.
You are on a boat and you spot many different islands, islands that you can conquer & leave behind once you’re done. These islands represent your goals, things such as starting a business or getting a promotion or even buying your own house. These are things that you can tick off in your to-do list.
Value, on the other hand, is your northern star. One thing that’s always there & guides where you’re going. It’s something that you strongly believe in with all your heart which can guide your direction in life. It could be things like knowledge, humility, service to others, love, respect, accountability.
No task you do today or tomorrow can ever tick this off your list. It’s not something you conquer & leave behind immediately, but something you work hard & aim towards to, that even when you’re in a storm, you’ll always have this to hold on to & bring you back to where you truly belong.
Imagine having to identify with your goals in life. Let’s say building a house. What if you won’t be able to do so? Would you lose yourself in the process? Even more, would you still be happy?
This is why it’s so important to have a strong sense of core values. Being aware of them helps you build a richer, more meaningful & more content life.
So how can you go about it?
Now, there are 3 things that you can do to cultivate more happiness in your life.
#1 Connect with people.
As I said, connection is crucial if you want to be truly happy. It’s true what they say, no man is an island. We are built for relationships. We are built for connections. Don’t be afraid to invest in them! It doesn’t have to be perfect, just sincere.
#2 Say ‘Yes!’ to things that excite you.
Don’t hesitate to say yes! No matter how scary it may be, if it sparks joy or if it’s something you know you’ll learn from & benefit from, go for it!
#3 Say ‘No.’ to things that drain you.
Don’t be afraid to say no. You are not bad for doing so. It’s important to set boundaries. So, say no if you have to. Protect your inner peace and don’t let anything nor anyone drain your positive energy.
